This course will focus on identifying common characteristics of dyslexia in the elementary classroom and introduce the fundamental principles and concepts of structured literacy. Participants will learn the relationship of the phonological system to the reading process. This class meets the requirements for North Dakota HB 1388 and explores all essential components of early literacy instruction. Those who move on to part 2 will learn about informal dyslexia assessment and screening.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Recognize common characteristics of dyslexia.
  2. Summarize the four stages of word reading and how phonological skills impact word- reading development.
  3. Create a structured literacy lesson plan.
  4. Reflect on the current literacy practices in your classroom, school, district, and/or agency.
