Description
Competency-based learning shifts grading from tracking compliance to measuring mastery. In this fully asynchronous, self-paced course, educators redesign one real unit from their own classroom, building proficiency scales, genuine evidence of learning, a feedback and reassessment cycle, and a visible progress-tracking system students can actually use. Participants leave with a classroom-ready pilot unit, not just a theory, plus a concrete plan to launch it. No prior competency-based experience required, just one unit you already teach and a willingness to rebuild it piece by piece.
Syllabus, Objectives, and Outcomes
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Identify the priority learning within a self-selected unit, distinguishing essential learning targets from secondary or supplementary content.
- Construct a 4-level proficiency scale for each priority learning target, using specific, observable language that describes what a student can actually do at each level.
- Design assessment evidence that authentically measures student mastery, distinguishing genuine evidence of learning from compliance-based tasks.
- Develop a feedback, revision, and reassessment structure that gives students a genuine opportunity to demonstrate growth toward proficiency after initial instruction.
- Design a system for tracking and communicating student progress that builds learner agency and integrates into an existing gradebook platform.
- Synthesize proficiency scales, evidence plans, feedback structures, and progress-tracking systems into one coherent, classroom-ready pilot unit, including a concrete implementation plan.
Required Student Resources:
