Melissa Vosen Callens

Melissa received her Ph.D. in 2010, earned her M.A. in 2006 and her B.S. in 2003 all from North Dakota State University. Dr. Vosen Callens is a Professor of Practice at NDSU. She teaches courses in popular culture, media literacy, professional writing, and online education. As a teacher, she views herself as a facilitator or guide. In her classes, she employs active learning strategies to engage students in course content. At the graduate level, she takes pride in mentoring her students. In each of her graduate class periods, she explains her pedagogical approach to learning for that day; after several class periods of modeling different techniques, she asks students to practice using these different strategies by facilitating a discussion or activity.

Much like writing, she believes that teaching is a reflective practice. To write and teach effectively, one must be willing to revise. To improve her courses, she participates in a variety of professional development opportunities related to teaching throughout the year.
