Description

The 2023 Native American Studies class will provide participants with resources to help them teach the new state requirement that will be added to North Dakota schools beginning soon. Teachers will meet with leaders in the area of Native American Studies from across the region. These leaders will provide materials and information to help facilitate teaching the class. This will include information on Native American history, geography, language, food, dance, storytelling.  Participant will also visit area historic sites. Registration is limited to 25.  If you are interested in this class, please contact Jeffrey Beck at jeff.beck@minot.k12.nd.us.

Syllabus, Objectives, and Outcomes

OBJECTIVES:

  1.  Familiarize participants with the various aspects of Native American Studies.
  2.  Provide an opportunity to experience the Native American culture firsthand.
  3.  Educate teachers on the importance of teaching Native American Studies in their classroom.
  4.  Stimulate educators to share information with their classrooms.

GOALS:

The goals are to strengthen teacher's understanding of:

  • online resources available through National Geographic Resource Library;
  • the instate resources from the North Dakota Studies Program and the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction
  • introduce and expose teachers to the rich cultural histories of Native Americans in our region through field trips and visits to key areas. 
  • facilitate alignment of teacher resources, field exercises and state learning objectives.
