Description
Read all of the books recognized for the Newbery Award in 2024.
Covers both fiction and nonfiction material targeted for high-level students from 4th-8th grade. You will be required to complete comprehension assessments as well as engage with weekly online discussions. The assignments will provide you a chance to draw from previous experiences, critical thinking, current events, and the critiquing of literature.
Syllabus, Objectives, and Outcomes
OBJECTIVES:
Throughout the course participants will
- Read and critique books to gain a greater knowledge of literature, draw from personal experience, and critique and compare picture books in terms of quality and content.
- Complete online assessments.
- Engage in discussions regarding the books.
- Complete six Newbery books from 2024.

You will be able to locate the following texts at school and public libraries, local bookstores, and online.
- "The Eyes and the Impossible" by Dave Eggers
- "Eagle Drums" by Nasugraq Rainey Hopson
- "Elf Dog and Owl Head" by M.T. Anderson
- "Simon Sort of Says" by Erin Bow
- "The Many Assassinations of Samir, the Seller of Dreams" by Daniel Nayeri
- "Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir" written and illustrated by Pedro Martin
