Description

Learn the foundations of second language acquisition. Explore the following questions: Who are English Learners? What is Language? What are the theories of language learning? What are the federal and state policies surrounding English language learners? What are the different instructional models and programs being used to teach English language learners?

OBJECTIVES:

Participants will:

  • explore the areas diversity of students that make up English Learners.
  • recognize the different components of “language”.
  • examine different theories around language learning and teaching.
  • understand educational policy that affects English Learners and teaching.
  • compare and contrast different instructional models and programs for English language teaching. 

REQUIRED STUDENT RESOURCES:

Wright, Wayne E.  Foundations for Teaching English Language Learners: Research, Theory, and Practice. Carlson Publishing, Philadelphia. 2019. 

Foundations for Teaching English Language Learners: Research, Theory, Policy, and Practice

The 2nd edition from 2015 works as well and is substantially cheaper. Both the 2nd and 3rd edition are available to rent on Amazon, but it is well worth the investment to buy this text. This text is used for both Foundations of Second Language Acquisition as Methods of Teacher English as a Second Language. 

Educators should have access to a device and wi-fi to complete this course. We will be using Google Classroom as a learning platform.
