Description
Prepares you for teaching second language acquisition. Focuses on using the Sheltered Instruction Operational Protocol (SIOP) to meet the needs of English learners' content classrooms. You will leave with much greater understanding Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and what it means to be a professional and advocate in the field.

Objectives:
Participants will:
· review foundational information in who English Learners.
· learn about TESOL and advocacy in the profession of SLA.
· understand and use the SIOP lesson planning style.
· explore the areas of linguistics.
· compare and contrast second language acquisition theory and teaching methods.
· apply knowledge to teaching English Learners using content-based instruction.
Required Text:
Wright, Wayne E. Foundations for Teaching English Language Learners: Research, Theory, and Practice. Carlson Publishing, Philadelphia. 2019.
The 2nd edition from 2015 works as well and is substantially cheaper. Both the 2nd and 3rd edition are available to rent on Amazon, but it is well worth the investment to buy this text. This text is used for both Foundations of Second Language Acquisition as Methods of Teacher English as a Second Language.
Educators should have access to a device and wi-fi to complete this course. We will be using Google Classroom as a learning platform.
