Description

Introduction to the relevance and need for incorporating reading and developing reading skills in middle and high school classrooms.  The purpose of this course is to promote understanding of how content literacy can contribute to the learning of content material and contribute to a positive learning environment in K-12 classrooms.

OBJECTIVES:

The candidates will:

  • understand basic reading and writing processes as they relate to content literacy and research-based practices.
  • know how writing can be used to promote and assess content learning.
  • know how to use various assessment techniques to support selection of the best methods for teaching content materials that meet the needs and interests of diverse students.
  • know how to select text and support students in using all forms of text in the content classroom.
  • select appropriate strategies for supporting student learning.
  • know the characteristics and practices of successful and struggling readers.
