This is an asynchronous course and students will complete all 4 sessions and content on their own time through Google Classroom. An active Gmail account will be required to access each session content.

These sessions are for K-12 educators focusing on best practices for reaching American Indian students and families along with providing them with significant Native American Cultural Competence content and culturally responsive practices. Many states and districts require Cultural Competence credits or hours and this course will cover all of that required material. This course will provide significant background information and overall teachings about Native Americans and will give the learners an enhanced world view. This training is open to all educators, teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, counselors, and social workers.

ND Education Standards and Practice Board encourages educators to take this course for Cultural Competence requirements and for the Native American content.

Syllabus, Objectives, and Outcomes

OBJECTIVES:

All participants will:

  • Learn to infuse Native American content into their work and practice.
  • Understand the impacts of “Historical Trauma” on Native Americans.
  • Understand Cultural Competency and Cultural Responsiveness with a focus on Native Americans.
  • Learn Cultural Native American Teachings.
  • Learn “Best Practices for Reaching Native American Students, Families and Community.
  • Learn the greatest strategies on how to reach challenging and at-risk students.
