Description

This interactive class offers discussion and practical activities that will help you discover what children are really thinking, feeling and deciding based on your parenting methods. Discover how using firmness and kindness increases mutual respect. Learn how effective communication, problem solving skills, and a focus on solutions over consequences can build self-esteem and empower families.

Syllabus, Objectives, and Outcomes

Objectives:

  1. Why punishments and rewards for children don't work.
  2. To change a "telling" statement into an "asking" statement. 
  3. What children learn through common discipline methods: yelling, threatening, time out, lectures, praise, giving in, etc.
  4. Recall the 4 Rs of the long-term results of punishment.
  5. Brain structures and science to explain to kids what happens when they are experiencing difficult emotions.
  6. How to effectively create a "calm down" space.
  7. The difference between a natural and a logical consequence.
  8. Difference between using praise vs. encouragement.
  9. Changing mistakes into opportunities to learn.

Required Student Resources:

The workbook, tool cards, and reading material will all be provided.
