Description

The "Remote Sensing and Forestry" institute will combine classroom and field preparation in remote sensing and forest land cover and assessment applications in Minot and the nearby Denbigh Experimental Forest and Towner State Nursery. Participants will engage in rich, hands-on experiences in classroom lectures, individual and group activities, computer-based exercises, and outdoor experiences.  The participants will transfer these exercises to practical classroom applications. The 1 credit professional development fee (up to $50 each) will be covered for the first 30 participants by a grant from America View. Register online at http://www.ndgeographic.org. Syllabus, Objectives, and Outcomes

OBJECTIVES:

The purpose of the workshop is to provide attendees with basic skills for interpreting remotely sensed images and their application to some of the North Dakota Common Core (K-12) standards for geography.  These include G.6_12.3: analyze the unifying physical and human characteristics of a region and their formal and informal boundaries; and G.6_12.4: use geographic tools to locate both the absolute and relative location of places and regions around the world. In addition, the workshop will introduce students to forest resources and their role in the environment.  There are three main learning objectives proposed for the remote sensing part of the workshop:

  • Objective 1: attendees will understand temporal and spatial resolution of remotely-sensed imagery, and their interpretation using pattern and spectral analysis.
  • Objective 2: attendees will become familiar with analyzing Landsat and other imagery using tools such as Landsat Viewer, Landsat Look viewer; and Google Earth.
  • Objective 3: attendees will design and share a lesson plan demonstrating some of the skills and tools used in the workshop relative to applicable North Dakota Common Core standards.

Objectives for the forest resources component include:

  • Participants will be introduced to the definition of trees and forests, and conducting field measurements of tree size
  • Participants will become acquainted with water quality and forest health.
  • Participants will analyze human-environmental interactions and the affects – good and bad - on natural resources, our state’s economy and social infrastructure.

"I WILL BE ABLE TO USE THE MATERIALS AND LESSON PLANS IN THE CLASSROOM."

"I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT TREES AND GEOGRAPHY THAT I AM VERY EXCITED TO SHARE WITH MY STUDENTS. I AM REALLY EXCITED TO USE THE RESOURCES I WAS GIVEN."

"EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS COURSE WAS AMAZING! THE TOURS WERE ESPECIALLY BENEFICIAL. TO BE ABLE TO SEE AND TOUCH THE MATERIALS WE WERE LEARNING ABOUT WAS IMPACTFUL. THE INSTRUCTOR MADE THE ENTIRE COURSE FUN AND ENJOYABLE. I PLAN TO TAKE THIS CLASS AGAIN. THANK YOU FOR OFFERING IT."

"I REALLY ENJOYED THE COURSE. I HAVE SEVERAL IDEAS TO INCORPORATE INTO MY CLASSROOM."

"I FELT BY SEEING AND ACTUALLY USING HANDS-ON-LEARNING WILL MAKE IT EASIER AND MORE MEANINGFUL AND FUN FOR MY STUDENTS. I NOW HAVE THE RESOURCES AND HAVE BEEN GIVEN KNOWLEDGE I CAN SHARE WITH MY STUDENTS AND OTHERS. EVERY YEAR AND EVERY CLASS I HAVE TAKEN MAKES ME A BETTER TEACHER AND ALLOWS ME TO SHARE THIS GREAT EXPERIENCE WITH OTHER TEACHERS IN THE STATE."
