This course is designed to provide professional school counselors and school counseling graduate students an overview of the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Positive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and its practical application in K-12 schools. In addition, course participants will learn how to use the Solution-Focused approach in a variety of school settings such as classrooms, counseling sessions, small group settings, parent meetings, and teacher consultation. Information about Positive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) will also be covered. Positive CBT infuses the best elements of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Positive Psychology into traditional CBT. Positive CBT shifts the focus in counseling sessions from the client’s deficits and problems to the client’s existing competencies and solutions. Information about how the Positive CBT approach can be used to 1) strengthen the therapeutic relationship; 2) assess problems, strengths, resources, progress, motivation, and hope; and 3) enhance traditional CBT activities and homework will be provided. Creative counseling activities using these two counseling approaches will also be discussed.
