Description

This course will help you better understand the behaviors of students who are adolescents and emerging adults. Topics most relevant to teenagers such as social and emotional development, behavioral health, changing relationships with families, self and identity development, and the increasingly important role of peers. We will explore this complex period of development through various lens such as trauma-informed, social, emotional (SEL) and social, emotional and cultural (SEC) competencies.

Can be taken for 1 credit by completing 1 course module, 2 credits (2 course modules), or 3 credits (3 course modules). Three credits taken at the same time are required for ND ESPB’s Middle Level Endorsement.

Objectives:

Module 1 - Educators will…

  1. Describe the factors that contribute to individual differences in development in adolescence.
  2. Analyze diversity of learner development, including cognitive, social, and emotional dimensions.
  3. Predict significant events that happen during adolescence that shape identity.
  4. Define growth mindset and its relevancy to educational contexts.

Module 2 -  Educators will…

  1. Summarize data from the ND 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey
  2. Evaluate personal strengths and challenges in social emotional development and describe how enhancing those areas might benefit their interactions with young people.
  3. Describe the effects trauma has on adolescent development.

Module 3 - Educators will…

  1. Develop an ability to use a social, emotional, and cultural (SEC) lens to guide instructional practice by exploring assumptions, biases, and beliefs about the impact of context and culture on adolescent development.

Questions to think about throughout the course:

  1. What are various important developmental milestones in this age group?
  2. What are the basic principles of developmentally appropriate practice? What developmentally appropriate practices do you integrate into your classroom?

Course Assignments:

Assignments are to be submitted to Blackboard. Assignments submitted on time may be revised and resubmitted within one week of receiving feedback for an improved grade. No assignment will be accepted after the last day of class, and any assignment not completed by that time will be scored 0. More specifics will be given for each assignment closer to due dates.
