Description
In collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, Plains Art Museum invites educators to participate in a professional development course introducing the Creating Portraits of Community curriculum.
Designed for educators working with students in grades 8–12, this course explores a four-lesson framework that supports students in documenting their communities through photography, portraiture, discussion, and oral history.
Participants will engage directly with inquiry-based learning strategies centered on identity, belonging, storytelling, and representation while considering how these lessons may connect to their own teaching practice and educational setting.

You will:
- Analyze and apply the Creating Portraits of Community curriculum framework.
- Explore photography, portraiture, and oral history as tools for storytelling and community connection.
- Develop strategies for integrating curriculum themes into classroom learning.
- Reflect critically on identity, representation, and community-centered storytelling.
- Create implementation ideas connected to their own educational setting.
